Some 35 years ago, I left Toronto, a city where I was born and raised, to pursue a dream and achieve a graduate degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles.
I settled in southern California to practice planning with IBI Group. There, I had an intriguing opportunity to collaborate on an extensive real estate rail company portfolio that spanned many states and took me from Texas to Oregon. With hundreds of properties to consider, we developed a planning and real estate evaluation process to assess these varied opportunities, and sort and allocate them into those with the greatest potential for real estate investment success. It was my initial taste of real estate triage, working hard to find the potential development gems, focus investment and create value.
In 1990, I returned to Toronto. For a decade I held progressively responsible positions as an urban planner, working on a diversity of plans and developments for both the public and private sectors with the IBI Group and Hemson Consulting.
In 1999, I founded my own company, Hunter & Associates Ltd., specializing in land use and development planning. Since then, we developed an active professional planning practice focused in Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe of southern Ontario, benefitting from many interesting and complex developments and planning approvals.
Now it’s time for a new chapter. In a business where change is constant, I’m excited and inspired about what’s next.
